DELHI: The government has promised the Lok Sabha that the data of the soon-to-be-launched e-passport will be protected by multi-layered cyber security safeguards.
In response to inquiries from MPs in the Lower House, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that the goal of issuing such an e-passport is to make travel quicker and smoother, as well as to assure improved security of the passport holder's data.
"The data will be stored on a chip through a customising process, and printing it will necessitate the use of a specialist printer. Digital keys, similar to digital signatures, will assure the safety and security of the data. There would be numerous layers of security this way "In response to inquiries about the e-data passport's security, Jaishankar stated.
Shashi Tharoor, a Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, highlighted the matter in Parliament, urging the administration to clarify cyber security issues relating to e-passports, stating that issuing such a document without any prior checks would be risky. Data can be stolen in this way, according to Tharoor, by multinational gangs, marketing organisations, other organisations, or even terror groups.
