London: The violent protests held in Nahel Merzouk's honour have been condemned by his grandmother, according to the Metro. The French teen was killed by a police officer on Tuesday.

Since the 17-year-old, who was from an Algerian family, was shot dead at point blank range during a traffic stop in Nanterre, France has experienced a wave of rioting.

Anger regarding the treatment of minorities by the police has been released as a result of the killing, which was caught on camera.

As irate rioters tore down buildings and cars, curfews were implemented and tens of thousands of police officers were sent into the area.

Nadia, the grandmother of Merzouk, said to French news outlet BFM TV on Sunday, "I want it to stop everywhere."

"I tell those who are causing destruction to stop! Let them not wreck the buses and schools, she pleaded.

Nadia claimed that she stayed at the scene of her grandson's death rather than joining the march organised by Merzouk's mother Mounia on Thursday.

As a result of the procession, several cars were flipped over and set ablaze in Nanterre's streets.

Nadia said of the past week of hardship for her family: "It's over, my daughter no longer has a life."

Earlier, Mounia expressed her sorrow over her son's passing, saying he enjoyed playing rugby and working as a pizza delivery boy.

Nadia claimed that she had no ill will towards the police in general and that she only held the officer responsible for Merzouk's death accountable.

"I trust in justice," she declared. French President Emmanuel Macron criticised the police in a rare public statement on Wednesday, calling the shooting "inexcusable."
