Greece has given the go-ahead to acquire 35 UH-60M Blackhawk helicopters from the US defense company Lockheed Martin Corp, according to sources familiar with the matter.

"The parliamentary committee has approved the purchase of 35 helicopters for 1.15 billion euros ($1.24 billion)," stated a government official.

This decision, finalized late on Tuesday, marks Greece's commitment to modernizing its armed forces, a crucial step as the country aims to revitalize its defense capabilities following years of economic challenges.

The purchase is part of a broader plan by the Greek government to strengthen its defense sector and bolster its shipbuilding industry, which has suffered setbacks due to the economic downturn. Greece's ambitious 10-year plan includes the acquisition of up to 40 new F-35 fighter jets from the US and three frigates from France.

Furthermore, Athens is currently engaged in discussions with the United States regarding the joint design and construction of Constellation-class frigates for the Greek Navy.

This move underscores Greece's determination to enhance its military capabilities and ensure national security in an ever-evolving geopolitical landscape.

The Greek Defense Force plays a critical role in safeguarding the nation's security and sovereignty. Comprising various branches including the Hellenic Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as specialized units, the defense force is tasked with defending Greece's borders, territorial waters, and airspace. In addition to its primary mission of national defense, the Greek Defense Force also contributes to international peacekeeping efforts and participates in NATO operations. Through continuous training, modernization efforts, and strategic partnerships with allied nations, the Greek Defense Force remains prepared to address emerging threats and uphold its commitment to ensuring the safety and stability of Greece and its citizens.
