The Candidates chess tournament saw a dramatic surge in competition as teenage Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh triumphed over Azerbaijan's Nijat Abasov, reclaiming a share of the lead. Gukesh's win places him alongside American player Hikaru Nakamura and Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia at the top of the leaderboard with 7.5 points each. Fabiano Caruana of the United States is in close pursuit with seven points. R Praggnanandhaa and Vidit Gujrathi struggled to keep up, with Praggnanandhaa in fifth place with six points and Gujrathi with five points. With only two rounds remaining in the double round-robin tournament, their chances of a podium finish are diminishing. Alireza and Abasov occupy the lower ranks with 4.5 and three points, respectively.

Gukesh, the second youngest player ever in a Candidates tournament, demonstrated exceptional skill against Abasov using a Nimzo-Indian defense strategy and securing a victory. Nepomniachtchi maintained a steady performance throughout the tournament, playing cautiously without taking excessive risks, including a draw against Praggnanandhaa.
