BAGHDAD: Unidentified gunmen targeted Shakhwan Abdullah's office in Kirkuk, Iraq's northern metropolis, according to a local police source. Abdullah is the second Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament.

According to reports, gunmen threw a hand grenade into Abdullah's office in the Rahim Awa neighbourhood in central Kirkuk, around 250 kilometres north of Baghdad, on Wednesday evening. According to Abdullah, he was not at the office at the time of the incident, which caused some damage to the structure. The office was closed off by Iraqi security personnel, who initiated an inquiry into the event. 

Following the Iraqi parliament's first session on January 9, which saw a heated debate between the parliamentary blocs, a series of attacks targeting MPs and headquarters of Sunni and Kurdish parties occurred.

During the session, parliamentarians re-elected Mohammed al-Halbousi as parliament speaker, while Hakim al-Zamili and Shakhwan Abdullah were elected to the first and second deputies, respectively, with a majority of votes.
