Guterres calls for diplomacy to ease tensions between Russia and Ukraine

UNITED STATES: On Monday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed for diplomacy to resolve rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine.Guterres expressed his concern about the existing tensions and growing speculation of a possible military clash in a press conference.

"The cost in terms of human suffering, destruction, and harm to European and global security is just too great to consider. Even the threat of such a terrible clash is too much for us to bear "he stated.

"Diplomacy is the only viable option. Diplomatic frameworks can and must be used to address and resolve all situations, including the most difficult. I am convinced that this philosophy will triumph "Guterres stated.

The secretary-general had a virtual meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier on Monday. He also spoke with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba individually.Guterres stated that he will continue to be actively engaged in the hours and days ahead.

He stated that it is his responsibility as Secretary-General to advocate for full respect for the UN Charter, which he described as a "fundamental foundation of international law."
