UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres  said Consistent breaches of Palestinian rights jeopardise the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"On this International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, is a major threat to international peace and security." Persistent. Despite being "encouraged" by recent meetings between senior Israeli and Palestinian officials, the top UN official stated that "managing the situation" is not enough. The basic goal of two states living side by side in peace and security, according to Guterres, remains the same. This includes achieving "both people's legitimate national ambitions, with borders based on the 1967 lines and Jerusalem as both states' capital."

The Secretary General advised the parties to avoid taking actions that would jeopardise the possibility of a peaceful resolution. Finally, he asked all parties to work together to "end the closure" of Gaza and improve the living conditions of all Palestinians living under occupation.

The statement was sent ahead of a special conference in New York on Monday to discuss Palestine's unsolved question and the Palestinian people's fundamental rights.
