Halep reached pre-quarterfinals by defeating Paula Badosa

Romania's veteran tennis player Simona Halep has made it to the last 16 of the Madrid Open tennis tournament by defeating Paula Badosa in straight sets. Two-time Madrid Open champion Halep has scored 21 'winners' and defeated second seed Badosa 6-3, 6-1. Halep has also won the title here in 2016 and 2017.

This is the first time in the last nine years that Halep has not been able to get a preference here so far. This is the first time she has competed in competition since participating in the Indian Wells tournament in March. Former world number one Victoria Azarenka defeated Tamara Zidansek 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in a match that lasted two hours and 20 minutes.

In other matches, 8th seed Ons Jabeur defeated Varavara Greteva 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 and Belinda Bencic defeated Carolina Muchova 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Amanda Anisimova of the United States has also struggled for three sets to win over Petra Martich.
