Former actress Amala Akkineni celebrates her 53rd birthday today. The Karwaan actress has been away from films, but she does make a rare appearance in television and digital platforms. Although she has been away from the mainstream cinema, Amala is known for her works in different sectors including the film school that Akkineni's own. But before getting into all this, Amala Akkineni was a name to consider within South cinema and did many hit films in the 90s.

She made her debut in 1984 with a film titled Mythili which was helmed by T Rajender. The filmmaker was looking for a dancer and Amala was a popular face in classical dancers circle and that’s how she bagged the role. Amala and Akkineni Nagarjuna met on the sets of the 1992 release Kirayi Dhadha. After a while, Nagarjuna proposed her for a wedding and the two got married in 1992. Amala and Nagarjuna have a son Akhil Akkineni who is also a famous actor in Telugu cinema.

After quitting films, Amala, with the help of her husband, began an animal care center called Blue Cross which is presently home to as many as 400,000 rescued animals. Amala was even recognized by PETA for her efforts to save animals and is helping rescue them. Besides being a successful heroine, Amala Akkineni is an equipped classical dancer. Trained under popular artist Rukhminidevi Arungal, Amala did stage shows at an early age of 13 in India and abroad.
