Career 2008–12: During college, he participated in various cultural programs and did mimicry and stand-up comedy on stage. In between his studies, he took a break of three months and during this time his friends convinced him to go for the audition of the comedy show reality show Kalka Povathu Yaru on Star Vijay. He started his career as a Mimicry Artist. Despite the initial reluctance to participate, he won the show. He was approached by director Pandiraj to play the lead role in his film Marina and Sivakarthikeyan signed the project. He prepared for his first role by visiting Marina Beach extensively to heed Pandiraj's instructions and study the surroundings, while revealing that he hoped his natural talent for humor came on screen.

2013 - Present: In 2013 he appeared in three films. In his first release of the year, KD Billa Kiladi Ranga, a dual-hero upcoming comedy, Sivakarthikeyan once again partnered with Pandiraj and shot the film with Vimal in his hometown Tiruchirappalli. The film opened to positive reviews with critics. The film became a surprise success at the box office and a profitable venture for producers and distributors. His next success was through Dhanush's first production venture Ethir Neechal, written and directed by RS Durai Senthilkumar, a former assistant to the film director, Vetrimaran. This is a story about a young man with talent as a runner, who tries to make his mark in glory. His third release in 2013, director Ponram's comedy Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam, portrayed him as a carefree rural youth, where he teamed up with another budding artist, Sri Divya. Actor Sori played a key role in the film as a close associate of Sivakarthikeyan. It was also the first time that Sivakarthikeyan sang a song in a film and a promotional video of its production was released to make the film. He won positive reviews for his performance from critics with Sify "Sivakarthikeyan is considered as awesome as Bosapandi because he makes this yarn so believable on screen with his body language, eyes and dialogue delivery". Another reviewer called him a pleasure to watch and claimed that he played the script. The film has completed 100 days during its theatrical performance and is Shivakartikeyan's biggest commercial box office success till date. Shivkartikeyan's entertaining performance in 2013 earned him the Vijay Award 2013 for "Entertainer of the Year".
