New Delhi: The test match played against Australia in 2001 at the EDen Gardens Stadium is seen as the beginning of a change in Indian cricket. It had filled the confidence in the team. The Sourav Ganguly led side had won a historic victory and one of the key reasons for this is the historic partnership between VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid on the side of Team India, which played the follow-on, but the foundation of the victory was laid by off-spinner Harbhajan Singh's hat-trick.
Harbhajan was just 20 years old at that time. In Australia's first innings, he had picked up three consecutive wickets off three balls. Australia were 252 for 4 and skipper Steve Waugh was batting along with Ricky Ponting. Within three balls, Australia were seven wickets for 252 runs. Now Harbhajan has spoken on this hat-trick and said, "That was a very important moment in my life. That hat-trick gave me a lot of recognition, a lot of confidence that I could do it."
I thought, if I could against these players, I could do better against any team," Harbhajan said. It was very necessary for me, because as I said it gave me a lot of recognition and people suddenly began to believe in me. They thought it could boy. That series and hatric proved to be the turning point of my life."
