USA: Twitter's new CEO, Elon Musk, asked employees to choose between being "extremely fanatic" and working intense, long hours or losing their jobs by Thursday, according to an internal memo obtained by AFP

The Tesla tycoon has been punished for making radical changes at the social media company he bought for US$44 billion late last month.

He has fired half of the company's 7,500 employees, scrapped a work-from-home policy, and imposed long hours, while his efforts to overhaul Twitter have been riddled with chaos and delays.

"In the future, we will need to be extremely agile to build a successful Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world," Musk wrote in an internal memo.

This requires working for long periods of time at a high level of intensity. Only exceptional performance will be considered as passing."
Employees have been asked to click a link to confirm their commitment to the "new Twitter" by 5 p.m. Thursday. new York time.

If they do not comply, they will be fired and given three months' severance pay. Twitter did not respond to requests for comment on the new measure from AFP.

Musk's failed attempts to reform user verification with a controversial subscription service have resulted in numerous fake accounts and pranks, and prompted major advertisers to abandon the platform.

Musk on Tuesday deferred relaunching Twitter's paid subscription service Blue Verified. He wants users to pay $8 for the coveted blue tick, previously given for free to verified accounts, granting authority to public figures and the media on Twitter. 

However, the system was suspended after a proliferation of accounts impersonating other people, including Musk. The re-launch date has been changed to 29 November.

Musk said Wednesday that the company's "organization structure" would be changed this week.
"I expect to reduce my time at Twitter and find someone else to run Twitter over time," he said after an "initial burst of activity" to reorganize the company.

Musk was speaking during a hearing about his $US50 billion pay package at electric car company Tesla. A shareholder has accused the South African multi-billionaire of being Tesla's part-time CEO, claiming compensation was not adequately vetted by the board of directors.

Musk has warned Twitter employees that the company could go bankrupt if the problem is not resolved soon.
Musk has fired more people in recent days, firing an engineer in a tweet after openly criticizing decisions made by the new leadership.

Musk tweeted, "I want to apologize for dismissing these talents. Their immense talents will undoubtedly be put to good use elsewhere."
