Trinidad: India suffered an unexpected defeat in Trinidad and Tobago to open their five-match T20I series against the West Indies. India was only four runs short of the target despite restricting the hosts to a total of 149/6, giving the West Indies a 1-0 series lead.

Hardik Pandya, the captain, did point out some positives, particularly praising Tilak Varma's performance as a debutant.

“Tilak – very pleasing to see the way he started his innings. Not a bad way to start your international cricket with a couple of sixes. You can see the confidence and the fearlessness they have. Going forward, they are going to do wonders for India,” Pandya said during the post-match presentation.

Tilak Varma got off to a strong start in his batting, slamming consecutive sixes on just his second and third pitches. Unfortunately, after adding 39 runs from 22 balls to India's total, he was eventually dismissed by fast bowler Romario Shepherd.

Tilak excelled at the plate but also contributed significantly on the field. He caught the dangerous Johson Charles off the bowling of spinner Kuldeep Yadav with an amazing catch.

He also had a big impact by returning Nicholas Pooran, who had scored 41 runs off of 34 balls off Pandya's bowling.

Pandya acknowledged the team's successful performance and praised their bowling effort. He did, however, add that India's rapid succession of wicket losses during the middle overs turned the game against them.

India needed only 37 runs to win in the final five overs at a crucial point, and with Pandya and Sanju Samson at the crease, they had a good chance.

But Jason Holder, a former captain of the West Indies, was instrumental in turning the tide in his team's favor. Holder immediately had an impact in the 16th over by dismissing Pandya with his first ball, and Kyle Mayers' astute fielding allowed Samson to be run out on the third ball.

India couldn't recover from the setbacks they experienced during that crucial stage of the game because Holder's over ended up being a maiden.
