Today, Gujarat government announced a new 10 per cent quota in government education and jobs for the poorest among those who benefit from no reservation on the basis of caste or religion. The shift may benefit the powerful Patel or Patidar community in the state, which has violently campaigned for reservation, lead by their jailed leader Hardik Patel.
On Friday, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel announced, those who earn less than Rs. 6 lakh a year will get quota under the new rules successful from May 1. after a meeting of the BJP's core group in Gujarat, which was attended by party chief Amit Shah. The decision takes quotas in the state to nearly 60 per cent, which exceeds the Supreme Court's limit of 50 per cent.
The new quota adds to the existing 49.5 per cent reservation for minorities in the state. Patidar leader Hardik Patel, who has been in jail since his arrest in October, has led the Patidar community protests for reservation that have often led to violent clashes in the past year.
