Hathras Tragedy: What Led to the Fatal Bus Crash on National Highway 93?

The death toll from the recent bus accident in Hathras has risen to 17 following the deaths of two children who succumbed to their injuries. The tragic incident occurred when a bus collided with a van on National Highway 93, resulting in the deaths of 15 people, including four women and four children.

On September 6, the bus hit the van from behind while attempting to overtake it on the Agra-Aligarh national highway near Kanwarpur village, approximately 10 kilometers from the Hathras district headquarters. The victims were traveling from Hathras to Agra.

District Magistrate Ashish Kumar confirmed that two children, Appi, aged 2, and around 12-year-old Gulshan, died at a hospital in Aligarh. Currently, 16 individuals, including 11 in Hathras and 5 in Aligarh, are receiving treatment for their injuries.

In response to the tragedy, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed local officials to provide immediate relief and support. Financial aid of ₹2 lakh each has been announced for the families of the deceased, and ₹50,000 for those seriously injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences and announced similar financial support. He urged the local administration to continue assisting the victims and oversee relief efforts. President Droupadi Murmu joined in expressing her sadness over the accident and extended her condolences to the affected families.

Authorities have registered a case and are working to make arrests related to the accident. Salam Mohammad, a relative of some of the deceased, mentioned that the accident occurred as family members were returning home from a mourning ritual.
