Patna: Violence in Bihar and loss of billions of rupees against the Modi government's ambitious Agnipath scheme at the Centre will not be recovered from the rioters. The Patna High Court has dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking compensation from the rioters for the loss of government property. The petition also sought that the persons who helped the students to incite violence and vandalism and spread anarchy should also be investigated. At the same time, action has also been demanded against the officers who are unable to stop the violent agitation.

A division bench of Patna High Court comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice S Kumar heard the petition on Friday (July 1, 2022). The court dismissed the plea after hearing the argument of state advocate general Lalit Kishore. Kishor argued that the government had cracked down on the anarchic elements and deployed adequate police forces. The petition had said that due to the negligence of the officers, government property worth several hundred crore rupees was destroyed in the state. Therefore, the property damaged should be assessed and compensated by the agitators.

At the same time, the petition has also stated that action should be taken against the responsible officers and a fine should be imposed on them. At the same time, there has also been a demand to impose fines on political parties participating in the movement. The petition said that due to this violent agitation, not only did the railways and other government properties suffer large-scale damage, but the safety of common citizens was also jeopardized. The petitioner claims that Danapur railway division alone has suffered a loss of Rs 260 crore. However, opposing the plea, state Advocate General Lalit Kishore told the court that the state government was fully alert to deal with the agitation. He said that a PIL has been filed with the wrong intention to defame the government. Violent protests were held in different parts of the country and trains were looted and set on fire in protest against the Agneepath scheme announced by the Central Government for army recruitment. Even the vehicles of school-going children were pelted with stones. The RJD and the Left parties had extended their support to the protesters. Let me tell you that Bihar was the most affected by the violence and protests.
