HC notice to Delhi government and Lt Governor on AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan's plea

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has Friday issued notices to the Lieutenant Governor and the Delhi government seeking their response on a petition filed by Delhi Waqf Board chief and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan. In the petition, the AAP MLA has sought an order to the Lieutenant Governor and the government to take a decision on the report seeking removal of three members of the Wakf Board.

Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri asked the Lieutenant Governor and the Delhi government to file a reply on the matter for the next hearing on April 5. The petitioner Khan, against whom four members of the Wakf Board have issued a notice of no-confidence motion to the Lieutenant Governor's office. Khan has said in the petition that the board has sent two reports on December 27, 2021 and March 7, 2022 for removal of the three members, but the government has not taken any action on it so far. In the petition, Khan has said that a decision on his report to the Lieutenant Governor and the government should be taken immediately before acting on the notice of the march 3, 2022 no-confidence motion against him as the head of the Delhi Wakf Board.

In fact, four of the seven members of the Delhi Wakf Board have submitted a notice of no-confidence motion against Khan on March 4, levelling several allegations, including defamation, corruption, to the Lieutenant Governor. The members have requested the Lieutenant Governor to convene a meeting of the Board within 18 days to take a decision on the no-confidence motion. At the same time, Amanatullah Khan has termed the allegations levelled against him as false.
