Deve Gowda filed his nomination in front of Assembly Secretary MK Vishalakshi as he has been elected as the Returning Officer for the Rajya Sabha elections. JDS declared Deve Gowda as the party's Rajya Sabha candidate on Monday. Announcing this decision, Kumaraswamy had said that Deve Gowda has agreed to contest the Rajya Sabha elections after the request of the interim president of Congress, Sonia Gandhi, various national leaders and party MLAs. He said that preparing him for the Rajya Sabha election was not an easy task.

The party has 34 seats in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and is not in a position to win the elections on its own and will need the support of the Congress to win this election. A candidate needs at least 45 votes to win. If Deve Gowda wins, this will be his second term in Rajya Sabha. Earlier, he went to the Rajya Sabha in 1996 when he became the Prime Minister of the country. In last year's Lok Sabha elections, Deve Gowda lost the election from Tumkur Lok Sabha seat of BJP to GS Vasavraj of BJP by more than 13 thousand votes.
