Mumbai: Heavy rain in western Maharashtra over the past several days has disrupted normal life there. Pune, Satara, Solapur, Sangli and Kolhapur districts of western Maharashtra are in the grip of flood. So far 1.32 lakh people affected by floods have been shifted to safer places in these districts.

Pune Divisional Commissioner Dr. Dipak Mhaskar said that teams of Army, Navy and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are carrying out rescue operations in both the districts and six more teams of NDRF will be sent to Kolhapur by Wednesday evening.

In the past seven days, 16 deaths have been reported in rain and flood-related incidents in western Maharashtra. He said, due to increase in water level in all dams in the region, water is overflowing and the Met Department has predicted continuous rain for the next three to four days. "342 bridges have been submerged and they have been closed for traffic," said Sanjay Shinde, resident deputy collector of Kolhapur. Mhaskar said more than 45 boats have been pressed into service for rescue operations.

The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said that Navy, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard have also been deployed along with teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to help the affected people. Many parts of the country are reeling under floods due to heavy rains these days.
