The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for intense rainfall in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and surrounding areas over the next few days. The warning comes as a depression, which formed over central India, is set to bring heavy to extremely heavy rain.
As of Thursday, the depression was located approximately 50 kilometers south-southeast of Agra and 50 kilometers north-northeast of Gwalior. It is expected to move north-northeast and gradually weaken by Friday.
From September 12 to 14, Uttarakhand is anticipated to experience light to moderate rainfall, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall possible in isolated regions. Haryana is also forecasted to receive light to moderate rain, with periods of heavy rainfall expected between September 12 and 15.
East and west Uttar Pradesh are likely to see heavy to extremely heavy rain during this period. In Madhya Pradesh, heavy rain is expected on September 12, followed by moderate to heavy rain over the next few days. West Rajasthan may face heavy rainfall on September 12, with east Rajasthan experiencing heavy to very heavy rain on September 12 and 13.
The IMD defines rainfall as "heavy" when it measures between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, "very heavy" between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm, and "extremely heavy" when it exceeds 204.5 mm.
According to Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency, the depression is likely to re-curve northeastward, moving away from the national capital and shifting towards west Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The system’s proximity to rugged terrain will lead to its rapid weakening into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours.
The IMD has warned of a moderate to high risk of flash floods, particularly in west Uttar Pradesh and east and west Madhya Pradesh. Surface runoff and flooding could affect low-lying and already saturated areas.
The heavy rainfall may lead to localized flooding of roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and potential closure of underpasses in urban regions. Traffic disruptions are expected due to waterlogged roads, reduced visibility in some areas, and possible minor damage to unpaved roads and vulnerable structures. Landslides and crop damage from the rain and wind are also possible.
