Several landslide cases on the National Highway connecting Sikkim to the rest of India led to heavy traffic jams on Sunday. Border Roads Organisation sources said several light vehicles were seen leaving Darjeeling in West Bengal to reach their destinations due to the jam.

Several landslides have occurred due to maximum rainfall since Saturday night and a major landslide occurred between Teesta and Rambi in West Bengal on Sunday morning, completely blocking the highway. Sources said trains lined up on the route of more than one km on both sides of the landslide site. Border Roads Organisation employees and officials are busy cleaning the highway and they are expecting the highway to open from one side but continuous rain is hampering the work.

Similarly, there have been landslides during monsoon in the same region in the past. The Himalayan region has been receiving heavy rainfall for the past one week. In Jammu and Kashmir, traffic on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been stopped on Saturday following landslides triggered by heavy rains in Ramban district. More than 500 vehicles are stranded here due to stoppage of movement of trains. Officials said the highway has been closed due to landslide in Magarkot area of Ramsu area.
