Berlin: Markus Soeder, the premier of Bavaria, said on Wednesday during a political festival in Germany that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz must "stop" Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock before she poses a "security risk" and causes Berlin to engage in a conflict with Moscow with her "thoughtless statements."
During what is known in Germany as Political Ash Wednesday, Soeder remarked that the foreign minister and her party, Alliance 90/The Greens, are talking themselves into a "war frenzy" regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The 100-year-old tradition, which has its roots in Bavaria, gives German politicians a platform to air their grievances and criticise their rivals without holding back.

The statement made by Baerbock to the European Council in January that the EU was "fighting a war against Russia" caused a stir at the time was specifically mentioned by Soeder. Midway through February, Baerbock acknowledged the error of her statement.
Soeder cautioned during the event in Passau, Bavaria, that "a foreign minister has to be careful what she says," adding that "an escalation of words can quickly lead to the escalation of violence." He insisted that while Germany is assisting Ukraine, it is not at war with Russia.

Stop Ms. Baerbock now, Mr. Scholz," Soeder pleaded, adding that the foreign minister's frequent "thoughtless statements" are frequently "to the detriment of our nation."
Among the most ardent Kiev supporters in the German government, Baerbock has frequently argued for increased military assistance to Ukraine and criticised Chancellor Olaf Scholz for allegedly not doing enough. Additionally, she has advocated for stricter sanctions against Russia and been against any agreements with Moscow.
She declared that any concessions to Russia in the ongoing conflict would be "naive" in October 2022. The minister argued that the West shouldn't accept any peace deal that would see Ukraine cede any territory it recognises as being in Kiev to Russia.

Soeder, a well-known member of the German opposition, has previously blasted Berlin for placing Ukraine's military assistance ahead of its own security. He argued, in particular, that Germany ought to have improved its own national defence instead of sending IRIS-T air defence systems to Ukraine.
