BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court will hear petitions from students at the Government Pre-University College for Girls in Udupi seeking permission to attend classes while wearing hijab on Tuesday. The question is expected to be decided by midday by the bench led by Justice Krishna S. Dixith.
The hijab issue began last month when a few students at Udupi Government Pre-University College began wearing hijab and were thrown out of class. The students refused to attend courses without wearing hijab, while the college management insisted on allowing them only if they refused to wear hijab.
The controversy is now being explored on a global scale. The hijab controversy continues to engulf college campuses across the state, with protesting students stating unequivocally that they will only attend courses if they are wearing hijab. Saffron shawls are also worn by Hindu students, bringing the problem to a sectarian level. They are adamant that they will not remove their saffron shawls unless Muslim pupils stop wearing hijab.
With the cooperation of the police, college officials are not allowing students to enter with hijab and saffron scarves. The matter has escalated into a significant dispute that threatens the state's law and order.
