BENGALURU: On Tuesday, prohibitory orders were imposed in the Shivamogga district of Karnataka, following acts of violence sparked by a hijab controversy. Due to the tumultuous nature of the situation, the district administration has imposed curfews to prevent crowds and students from stone-pelting. 'Bhagva dhwaj' was hoisted in the college grounds by protesting students wearing saffron shawls.
Education Minister B.C. Nagesh has directed the Education Department to consider declaring a two-day holiday for colleges and schools in light of the current scenario, which is becoming increasingly violent in the wake of the hijab row.
Even as the hijab issue erupted into violence, the Education Department stated on Tuesday that PUC (Class 12) annual examinations will be given between April 16 and May 6.
The incident began when two groups of students flung stones at each other, said Shivamogga Superintendent of Police Lakshmiprasad. Two students were injured, and the police are still hunting for them. He said, the authorities are investigating how the stone pelting began.
The students were sent back as a precautionary measure, according to R. Selvamani, District Commissioner of Shivamogga district. He stated that a complaint of stone pelting had been received and that an investigation will be conducted.
According to sources, the police have put four students from Shivamogga Government College into jail as a result of the violence, and their parents have appealed to the police action. Stones were thrown at one of the city's private buses by miscreants.
