The Central Election Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party has given its approval in the name of Indu Goswami for a seat in the Rajya Sabha of Himachal Pradesh for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. Indu contested the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections from Palampur in 2017 as a BJP candidate but she lost the election. Her name was also included in the race for the President of the Himachal Pradesh Women's Commission after the formation of the BJP government in the state. Earlier on 18 July 2019, Indu resigned as the President of the State Mahila Morcha. Himachal BJP had sent the names of three leaders to the high command for the post of Rajya Sabha member.

In the race to become a Rajya Sabha member, BJP leaders from Uttarakhand origin Mahendra Pandey, former BJP state president Satpal Satti and Central University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Kuldeep Chand Agnihotri were named. The names of Indu Goswami, Chandramohan Thakur and Virendra Kashyap were also discussed.

After completion of the tenure of BJP leader Shanta Kumar in Rajya Sabha, Viplav Thakur was elected to Rajya Sabha from April 10, 2014, to April 19, 2020. Now the new Rajya Sabha member will be elected even before the term of Viplav is over. March 13 is the last date for filing nominations for a Rajya Sabha seat in the state. Nomination can be filed by the candidate or his proposer from 11 am to 3 pm. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on 16 March which will be able to withdraw the name by March 18. On March 26, the polling process will be completed between 9 am and 4 pm.
