Dehradun: Due to plate movement and weather changes, other Himalayan states, including Uttarakhand, are now suffering further damages like earthquakes, landslides, extreme rains. The challenge is to develop a strong disaster management mechanism in front of all the states to deal with disasters. In front of the Chief Ministers of the Himalayan states being held in Mussoorie on July 28, Uttarakhand has completed its preparations to come together to overcome the same challenge.
After 10 years, the Himalayan states are once again coming together on a stage. This time mussoorie is looking forward to its shared problems and support from the Centre. The conference will mainly discuss some of the points that all the Himalayan states are battling. The Himalayan States have an important responsibility to protect the environment. So many big projects are not sanctioned here because of the environment. Industries also do not grow because of the high cost in the mountain. All states want assistance from the Centre in lieu of this.
The Centre is also fully aware of the concerns of these sensitive regions. So, when the 15th Finance Commission held discussions with the states, it took a positive stand on the issue and asked for grants up to 7.5 per cent of the state's annual budget. But the Himalayan State Conference is supposed to demand more from the Centre. The Himalayan states are demanding a green bonus of 15 per cent of the state's annual budget for environmental protection.
