Minister of State of Assam of India Himanta Biswa Sharma has said that the state government has decided to send a proposal to the Center to make Assamese the language of the state. Himant said in a press conference, all Indian states were basically reorganized on the basis of language. After this, the number of people speaking the language of the state may differ due to migration. However, it is important to keep the language on the basis of state formation.

In his statement, he said that the state cabinet has decided that by amending Article 345 of the Constitution of India, the central government can declare the Assamese language as the state language of Assam excluding Barak Valley, BTAD region and hill districts.

Apart from this, Sharma said, we will bring legislation in the next assembly session so that it becomes mandatory that Assamese language should be taught as a compulsory subject in all English and other medium schools. However, this law will not be applicable to hilly districts, BTAD, Bodo dominated areas and Bara Valley. He said that a bill will be introduced in the assembly session to protect the land rights of indigenous people. According to the new bill, only one Assam citizen can sell or buy land to another Assam citizen.
