New Delhi: Today i.e. Thursday (December 1) is going to be a historic day for the Supreme Court. Actually, it is being told that this will be the third time when the full women's bench of the Supreme Court will hear. At present, the number of women judges in the Country's Supreme Court is only three. The supreme court got its first woman judge in 1989 as Justice M Fathima Bibi.
According to the report, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Wednesday (November 30) constituted the bench, comprising Justices Hima Kohli and Bela M Trivedi. The court had its first women's bench in 2013. Justices Gyan Sudha Misra and Ranjana Prakash Desai were present in the court. The second time was in 2018 when Justices R Banumathi and Indira Banerjee came together. A total of 32 cases are listed before a bench of Justices Kohli and Trivedi. At present, there are only three women judges in the apex court. These include Justice Kohli, Justice Trivedi, and Justice BV Nagarathna. Justice Kohli's term ends in September 2024. Whereas, Justice Trivedi will hold this post till 2025. It is reported that in the year 2027, the country is going to get its first woman CJI.
Earlier, Justice BB, Justice Sujata Manohar, Justice Ruma Pal, Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, Justice R Banumathi, Justice Indu Malhotra, Justice Indira Banerjee, Justice Kohli, Justice Nagarathna, Justice Trivedi, have served as women judges in the Supreme Court. Justice Banerjee retired on September 23 this year.
