After the May 31 issue of continuation of lockdown in India, the central government may limit its role and refer the matter to loosen or tighten restrictions. After discussing with the Chief Ministers of the states, Home Minister Amit Shah met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. In this meeting, the Home Minister informed the Prime Minister about the views and suggestions of the Chief Ministers. An announcement can be made about the next phase in a day or two. On the other hand, Goa CM Pramod Sawant, who discussed with the Home Minister, has indicated to increase the lockdown by 15 days.

A senior government official said that in the next phase, the Center is considering limiting its role to handing over the restriction or increasing the case to the states. However, for the 30 urban areas worst affected by the corona in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Bengal, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Odisha, the Center states are advised to maintain the earlier restrictions. 80 percent of Corona cases in the country are in these urban areas. In these 30 urban areas, the situation of 13 cities including Delhi Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai is worse. Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba has reviewed the situation by meeting online with DM and city administrators of their cities.

In the next phase of lockdown, the central government will limit its role till the ban on international flights, political programs and cinema halls, malls etc. The physical distance law will be strictly enforced with the use of masks in public places. In other cases, states will have to decide for themselves. States will also have to take decisions in cases like running the metro and opening school-colleges. States can also take decisions regarding opening of religious places. There will now be a fortnightly review on the methods of lockdown where the states will have to tell about the steps taken in their jurisdiction.
