New Delhi: The Central government has reiterated that there is no plan to conduct a caste-based census in Census 2021. It has been clarified by the Government that it has now been decided not to conduct any caste census except scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. The Home Ministry informed the Upper House of Parliament that the decision has been taken as per the policies.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said, "The Central Government has not conducted any caste census except Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes since Independence. The Ministry has also informed that it is aware that a resolution has been passed in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly for conducting the caste-based census. The Ministry informed that the National Sample Survey (NSS) has not been designed to estimate the assessment, especially in respect of the population of the country or any other social group. NSS collects household social group information through household-based surveys. It is done only for the purpose of classification.
One of the highlights is that on Wednesday, the apex court dismissed a petition filed by the Maharashtra government requesting the Central government and other officials to provide raw caste data for 2011 SECC other backward classes (OBC) to the state.
