Home Ministry claims: Indian citizenship granted to 82 refugees from Pakistan

New Delhi: The Centre has granted Indian citizenship to 82 citizens who had moved from Pakistan to seek asylum in India. This information was given by the Ministry of Home Affairs in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. In its reply, the Home Ministry said that the Modi government at the Centre has granted Indian citizenship to 82 people who had been displaced from Pakistan under the provisions of Section 16 of the Nagrikta Act, 1955.

According to the Home Ministry, the Central government has given special powers to the Home Secretary of Rajasthan and the Commissioner of 16 districts, using the rights mentioned in Section 16 of the Citizenship Act, 1955. Under the Special Powers, these officers are empowered to grant Indian citizenship by registering legal migrants belonging to six minority communities.

According to the Home Ministry, this right can only be exercised on legal migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. The six minority communities that have been allowed to grant Indian citizenship include Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians. According to the ministry, the 16 district commissioners who have been given this power include the district commissioners of Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Jaipur.
