Hong Kong police on Wednesday detained sixteen people on charges related to anti-government protests last year. It also includes two opposition MPs. Pro-democracy MP Ted Hui and Lam Cheuk-ting are detained in the early hours of Wednesday.
In a post on Lam's Twitter account, he has been detained during a protest in July 2019 on charges of damaging wealth and obstructing justice. The tweet states that he has also been accused of rioting on 21 July 2019. This is the day when a group of more than 100 people in the metro station attacked the protesters and passengers with steel rods.
Many people of the protesters and opposition party accused the police of colluding with the attackers because the police not only reached the spot late but did not detain anyone that night. It is not clear from the Facebook post on what charges he has been arrested. Hong Kong's Democratic Party has confirmed the arrest of both members in a Facebook post.
Nine thousand people have been arrested so far since the protest started in June 2019. Media legend Jimmy Lai, who was arrested in Hong Kong under the disputed National Security Act of China, got bail from the court. He is a high profile person arrested under the new law. After his release from prison, he attacked China and said that there can be no peace in the world without changing China. He has also asked the agitators demanding democracy to be careful.
