At the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, Anna Sawai made history by becoming the first Asian woman to win the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama. She received the award for her portrayal of Lady Mariko in FX's series ShĹŤgun, standing out among a competitive field of nominees, including Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Carrie Coon, Maya Erskine, and Imelda Staunton.

A Journey Rooted in Music and Acting

Born in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1992, Anna's early years were shaped by frequent relocations due to her father’s job, taking her to Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Japan by the age of 10. Her mother, a piano teacher, introduced her to music at a young age, fostering her passion for the arts.

At just 11 years old, Sawai made her stage debut as the lead in Annie in Tokyo, setting the stage for her future in performance. She transitioned to Hollywood at 16 with her role in Ninja Assassin (2009), where she played Kiriko, a female ninja who stands against her clan’s unethical practices.

Venturing into Music and Returning to Acting

In 2012, Sawai joined the Avex Trax girl group ARA (Avex Rising Angels), but the group disbanded after one single. She later became the lead vocalist for Faky under Rhythm Zone, where she explored various solo projects. By late 2018, she decided to fully focus on acting, leaving Faky to pursue her passion.

Sawai returned to the screen in 2019 with a role in the British crime series Giri/Haji, followed by a part in the blockbuster F9: The Fast Saga. Her character, Elle Lue, was pivotal to the plot, which revolved around a powerful device created by her late parents.

Rise to Stardom with 'ShĹŤgun'

In 2021, Sawai landed her breakthrough role in ShĹŤgun, an FX period drama adapted from James Clavell’s 1975 novel. The series, set in feudal Japan, tells the story of John Blackthorne, an English sailor caught in Japanese political intrigue. Sawai’s portrayal of Lady Mariko, a pivotal character in the series, earned her critical acclaim and led to her historic Emmy win.

A Versatile Career on the Rise

Sawai’s acting career continued to flourish with major roles in popular series. She appeared in Pachinko (2022), a multi-generational Korean family drama on Apple TV+, and later in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023), where she played Cate Randa, a schoolteacher affected by the return of Godzilla.

With her historic Emmy win and a diverse portfolio of roles, Anna Sawai has firmly established herself as a trailblazer in the entertainment industry.
