World Refugee Day is celebrated on June 20 every year to honor the courage and strength of refugees across the world. The United Nations celebrates this day to honor refugees who are also forced to live outside their homes. The purpose of this day is to further enhance understanding and empathy for refugees making their lives in new countries.

The theme for this year's World Refugee Day is "Together We Heal, Learn and Shine".  At the same time, the United Nations has said that the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic had made it clear that we can only succeed by standing together. The United Nations has also called for greater inclusion of refugees in the healthcare system around the world.

History of World Refugee Day:  World Refugee Day was first celebrated on 20 June 2001 on the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Conference. The United Nations General Assembly in December 2000 officially designated June 20 as World Refugee Day.
