Rahman was born on 6 January 1966 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His full name is Allah Rakha Rahman. His real name is 'Dilip Kumar'. He has inherited music from his father. His father was also a musician. AR Rahman was born in a Hindu family. At the age of 23, inspired by his Guru Qadri Islam, he accepted Islam.
AR Rahman once in an interview said His mother had gone to an astrologer. The astrologer said that the name 'Abdul Rahman' or 'Abdul Rahim' would be good for AR Rahman. Eventually, he changed his name from Dileep to AR Rahman. He decided to convert himself after his father's death AR Rahman's father died in the year 1986. He once said, “I contemplated suicide. Because my father had passed away, there was a kind of vacuum… So many things were happening.”

He composed jingles for TV ads and got the much-awaited break in 1992 when director Mani Ratnam approached him to compose the score and soundtrack for Roja, a Tamil film. He was later signed by Cinematographer Santosh Sivan for Yoddha, a Malayalam film. AR Rahman won his first National Award for the best music director for Roja.
