Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is already on the backfoot over the allegations against former state minister Partha Chatterjee in the West Bengal School Teacher Recruitment Scam (SSC scam). Now a case filed in the Calcutta High Court has created a stir in the TMC camp. Actually, a person named Biplab Chaudhary has filed a case. He, through his lawyer Shamim Ahmed, has urged the Calcutta High Court to probe the properties of 19 politicians and ministers in the state. Most of these 19 leaders are leaders or ministers of Mamata Banerjee's party TMC.
At the same time, the Calcutta High Court accepted the case and made the Enforcement Directorate (ED) a squad. After this, on Wednesday, TMC leader and minister Firhad Hakim, minister Malay Ghatak, minister Jyotipriya Mallick and minister Bratya Basu came in front of the media and alleged that the names of leaders of all parties are on this list, but only TMC is being defamed. Advocate Ahmed Shamim has submitted a list of 19 leaders and ministers in the case filed in the Calcutta High Court. He also alleged that the assets of these 19 people have increased at an unusual rate over five years (2011-2016).
Advocate Ahmed Shamim has urged the court to see how the assets of these leaders have increased so much. He has also urged the central agency to probe the property. Then a division bench of Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj of Calcutta HC allowed the petition. The ED was also made a party in the case. The petitioner has contended that between 2011 and 2016, there has been a huge increase of about 250 per cent in the assets of 19 people. In most cases, the wives of the listed men are not associated with any profession. After that, he urged them to see how their wealth grew so much. Earlier, a public interest litigation case was filed in the court in 2017 regarding the increase in the assets of state leaders and ministers. Based on the source of that case, the lawyer has made this new request.
