On June 30, Hul Kranti Diwas 2024 or Hul Diwas is observed across the nation to honor the courageous revolutionaries who challenged British rule with their bravery. This day commemorates the uprising led by tribal brothers Sidho-Kanho and Chand-Bhairav, along with approximately 50,000 tribals in Bhognadih (now Sahibganj). They defiantly declared war against the oppressive Mahajani practice and British settlement policies on this day in 1855.

The Spirit of Rebellion
Before the widespread revolt of 1857 that shook British authority in India, the Santhal Rebellion of 1855 laid the groundwork. The primary grievance was the exorbitant agricultural taxes imposed on tribals, ranging from 50 to 500 percent of their produce.

History of Hul Diwas 2024
The rebellion resonated deeply against British exploitation, advocating for tribal independence and refusing to pay unjust land revenues. In response, local landlords and British-appointed officials faced severe reprisals, marked by the slogan "Zumidar, Mahajan, Police Rajden Amla Ko Gujukamad," signifying the destruction of landlords, moneylenders, police, and government agents.

Sacrifice and Martyrdom
The English administration responded with extreme brutality, sentencing Chand and Bhairav to death. Sidho and Kanho met a similar fate, publicly hanged from a tree in Bhognadih on July 26, 1855. It is estimated that 20,000 tribals lost their lives during this tumultuous period.
