BUDAPEST – The newly elected Hungarian Parliament met for the first time here, electing crucial leaders. According to the reports,
Laszlo Kover, a founding member of the ruling Fidesz party, was re-elected as Speaker. He was elected to the office for the first time in 2010 and was re-elected in 2014 and 2018. Six Deputy Speakers were also elected by Parliament.
President Janos Ader presided over the third and final session of the new Parliament since his term would expire in a few days and he will be succeeded by Katalin Novak, the country's first female president.
Ader has requested newly elected MPs to re-elect Viktor Orban as Prime Minister, a position he will hold for the sixth time, a record in Hungarian politics. Orban has been the prime minister of Hungary since 2010, however, he previously held the role from 1998 and 2002.
Following the general elections on April 3, Ader publicly called on Orban to form a new government on April 29. Orban, who won by a significant margin in the elections, garnering 135 seats out of a total of 199 in the 199-seat Parliament, agreed to the request.
