ATHENS: Thousands of Greeks flocked to the streets in central Athens and other major towns throughout the country to demand additional relief measures in the face of the country's current energy crisis and high inflation as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Demonstrators chanted "democracy, justice, peace, and equality" as they marched in front of Parliament in the capital city, holding banners with similar phrases, as per reports.

Workers protested against the wave of rises in energy, petrol, bread, and food that has rocked the country, according to ADEDY, the umbrella labour organisation for civil personnel."We demand wage hikes so that we can live in dignity," the statement continued. "Unemployment rates are high, and salaries are insufficient even for a half-month," Christos Katsikas, an Athens activist and professor said.

For Maria Patrikiou, a nurse in a public hospital said, May Day still holds true today as every year. "Our rights have been challenged, particularly this year, due to the crisis and the conflict. That is why we have come here to fight for our wages, for our lives "she continued.
At the same time, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis issued a social media remark in honour of Labor Day.
