When it comes to the advancement of electric powertrain technology, Hyundai is one of the leaders. According to Car Expert, the South Korean automaker is not yet ready to abandon the development of internal combustion engines in favour of electric transportation.

There were rumours that the carmaker might stop working on internal combustion engines in favour of electric cars. It did, however, later declare that it was untrue. Additionally, Hyundai declared that, at least in Europe, it would only sell electric automobiles after 2035.

The former President and Head of the Research and Development Division of the Hyundai Group, Albert Biermann, has now stated that the manufacturer would not abandon ICE.

Additionally, according to Biermann, Hyundai must keep developing internal combustion engines if it is to keep its position on the world automotive scene.“We are continuing for next emission levels. We have no other choices. I mean, we are not giving up on combustion engines, right, we are global player." he further added.

Furthermore, he declared that Hyundai plans to produce engines that would adhere to the impending Euro 7 pollution standard, which is set to come into effect starting in 2025. Why is the manufacturer still working on internal combustion engines when the global automotive industry is shifting its attention more and more toward electric cars?

One of the main reasons, according to Biermann, why automakers like Hyundai continue to be interested in creating internal combustion engines is the lack of EV charging infrastructure.“So we keep going with combustion engines but will we set up a whole new combustion engine family? Yeah, I mean, you have to follow the emission regulations and that requires sometimes intense development. Euro 7, for example, is quite challenging. So that’s on the agenda," he added.
