When 13-year-old Ardara Sajan shifted from Dubai to Kerala, she was waiting for a world full of birds chirping, bees buzzing and honoring vehicles. Her deep understanding led her to become a self-taught mimicry artist who participated in the Kerala School Youth Festivals. But performing specific acts at Fest did not help her score to get good grades and, from 2017, she decided to improve her memory to include beatboxing, a form of vocal percussion by mimicking drum machines, by using mouth, lips, voice and tongue.

She won the district and state school of art festivals. Young girl, who is just a class 12 student at Nalanchira St. John's HSS in Thiruvananthapuram, is now known in the music industry for her unique skills and is regarded as the only female beatboxer in the country. Her triumph in youth sports also presented ample opportunities to collaborate with musicians such as Jassi Gift and Vidhu Pratap and within a short span of time, she followed a good fan following in the music app and social media for her beatboxing videos.

Ramya: I can use my creative freedom

During an interview in the middle of her practice for the state school Kalolaswam, she said, “During the school competition, I was drawn to the genre after watching a beatboxing performance by one of my seniors, Adarsh. There were no female artists in this genre and because of this, it took me 3 months to learn the basics of beatboxing through YouTube tutorials and practice with my own music.
