NEW DELHI: The nominees for the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year 2022 award were announced on Friday. They include Pakistan captain Babar Azam, England Test captain Ben Stokes, Zimbabwean off-spin all-rounder Sikandar Raza, and seasoned New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee.

Stokes is up for the title a second time after taking home the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy in 2019, which is given to the men's cricketer of the year. Additionally, he is a candidate for Test player of the Year.
Azam was nominated for the best 50-overs player of the year title for 2022, while Raza had previously received nominations for the Men's T20I and ODI player of the year awards.

After devastating series losses in the Ashes and the series against the West Indies, England was experiencing a nightmare in Test cricket. Stokes and Brendon McCullum, the red-ball coach, took over as Test captain after Joe Root resigned.

Since then, Stokes has led England to unprecedented heights, leading them to victories in nine of ten Test matches. He has taken 26 wickets and amassed 870 runs along the road, including two centuries. The legendary all-rounder did not enjoy a stellar season with the white ball.

He even made the decision to stop playing ODI cricket in order to concentrate on the other formats. 143 runs were scored in nine T20I matches, and seven wickets were taken. However, 52 of those runs came when England most needed them, during the chase in the T20 World Cup final against Pakistan. The figures might not appear noteworthy.
