Chad President Idriss Déby Itno has died after being injured in an attack by rebels. According to a statement issued by the army, Mr. Déby was seriously injured in the rebel attack and breathed his last on Tuesday. The Army has said that after the death of the President, his son General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has been elected as the interim Head of State of the country. Mr. Déby, who has been the President of Chad for the past 30 years, won for the sixth consecutive term in the Presidential election held on April 11 this month. 14-day national mourning has been declared in the country on the death of Déby.

It has been revealed that Idriss Daby Into had been ruling the country since 1990. According to the preliminary results of the April 11 presidential election, Into won the election.  According to reports, Déby got 79.32 percent votes while Pahimi Padake Albert got 10.32 percent. First woman candidate Ledi Bisseda got only 3.16 percent votes.

It has been learned that the supreme court of the country, however, is yet to approve the results. 64.81 percent of voters exercised their franchise in the elections. Sixty-eight-year-old Déby took power in a military uprising in 1990. After which he won this sixth election.
