Kochi: Kerala Governor and former Union Minister Arif Mohammad Khan has said that he will not sign bills passed by the Assembly if the state government goes against the spirit of the Constitution and the Supreme Court verdict. Arif Khan's statement comes at a time when the Kerala Assembly is in session to pass around 11 MLAs.

According to media reports, in response to a question on a bill to amend the provision that empowers the governor to appoint VCs in state-run universities, Khan said, "You think that will I sign any law which is against the spirit of the Supreme Court's decision? Definitely not.'' He further said, ''The bill takes the form of law only after it is signed by the Governor. I am just telling you that I will not sign anything which goes against the constitution, which tries to take away the autonomy of the university and which opens the way for government interference in the university. It is not possible for me to sign such a thing.''

Last week, Governor Arif Mohammad Khan stayed the appointment of Priya Varghese, wife of KK Ragesh, private secretary to the chief minister, as Malayalam associate professor at Kannur University, as the chancellor of state universities. With this, he had banned the move of nepotism in the university.
