Raipur: Even though Chhattisgarh claims to have made strict laws to deal with the problems of witchcraft, the reality is that even today people are killed in the wake of superstition. In rural areas, especially due to witchcraft, there is a quarrel and the dispute increases so much that there is a need to kill. The latest incident took place in Podhi village of Koriya district where a woman was killed by her own neighbour only because he suspected she rehearsed witchcraft. The neighbour felt that his wife was not having a child because of the woman's witchcraft.
The incident took place on Friday evening in the Nawadih area when the criminal attacked a 50-year-old woman Kalesiya alias Kaushilya with an iron sharp weapon and brutally killed her. Premsai Pando, the husband of the deceased woman, told the police that his wife Kalesia was coming home after bathing at around 5.30 pm yesterday. After receiving the news of the same murder, the police reached the spot and investigated and a team was formed to nab the absconding criminal. The culprit was finally arrested after a blockade in the surrounding area. When Umesh was interrogated after apprehending the perpetrator of the murder, he said that the deceased congregation was his neighbour. He said, 'The deceased woman used to abuse him sometimes, his wife was always ill and children were also not being born.' The offender said that he suspected that witchcraft was being practised by the women's church so he was facing many troubles, after which, he planned to kill the church. The criminal Umesh told the police that on Saturday evening when the deceased woman was coming back to her house from the pond, seeing the opportunity, she attacked her with a sharp weapon. He died. The police have also recovered the iron-edged weapon used in the murder. The police officer said that the age of criminal Umesh Kumar Kewat is 22 years.
