IIT Madras: Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and Information Technology today, January 24, tested 'BharOS' an indigenous operating system developed by the Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Madras.

Congratulations to everyone who contributed to the system's development. When our Prime Minister Narendra Modiji first discussed a digital India 8 years ago, some of our friends made fun of him, but now, technocrats, innovators, businesses, policymakers, and educational institutions across the nation have accepted his vision,  he said.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of union telecom, was also present. There will be challenges along the way, and many people in the world will create obstacles and work against the development of any such system, said Vaishnav.

BharOS is a revolutionary mobile operating system that prioritises security and privacy. A mobile operating system, such as Android by Google or iOS by Apple, is a piece of software that serves as the main user interface on a smartphone. A free and open-source operating system (OS) for use in governmental and public systems is being created as part of the BharOS project, which is being supported by the Indian government. The project seeks to encourage the adoption of locally created technology while reducing reliance on foreign operating systems in cellphones. The development of an indigenous environment and an independent future represents a giant step forward.

Currently, BharOS Services are being offered to businesses with tight privacy and security standards, whose employees handle sensitive data that necessitates secret conversations using limited mobile apps. Such consumers require private 5G networks with access to private cloud services.

The IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, a Section 8 (Not for Profit) Company formed by IIT Madras, served as the incubator for JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops), which created the BharOS. The National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems of the Government of India's Department of Science and Technology (DST) provides funding for the Foundation (NMICPS). It aims to put India on par with the select few nations that already have these capabilities.
