CHENNAI: On Thursday night,  A 21-year-old student was seen dead in the room of Tapti hostel of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras Thursday evening. The police said the youth had ended his life.

According to his peers, the student, who goes by Subhranshu Sarkar and is from Odisha, had been depressed for the past several days.

Police said, the victim was a fourth-year B. Tech, an Aerospace Engineering student from Odisha. The body was transferred to Government Royapettah Hospital by the Kotturpuram police for an autopsy. Unnatural death has been reported in one instance. Further research is being done. His laptop and mobile device were found.

The student had not left his room since Thursday morning, according to Kotturpuram police, and when his companions knocked on his door in the evening, no one answered. He was found dead in the room when the door was busted open.

After receiving a call, the Kotturpuram police located the deceased and sent it to Royapettah Government Hospital for an autopsy. Police have opened an inquiry into a case that has been filed.

In the meantime, the management of the institute in a statement said: "IIT Madras expresses the unfortunate and untimely passing away of a fourth-year undergraduate student of the Aerospace Engineering department with deep sorrow and anguish."

It also reported the parents of the student were informed and they were on their way to Chennai.
