IIT-Bombay Launches App and Website for Real-Time Rainfall and Flood Forecasting in Mumbai

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) has developed new online platforms designed to provide real-time forecasts for rainfall and flood monitoring specifically for Mumbai during the monsoon season.

These innovative platforms were developed by a dedicated team of students, faculty, and staff from IIT-B's Interdisciplinary Programme in Climate Studies (IDPCS). The information can be accessed via the web portal mumbaiflood.in and the MUMBAI FLOOD APP. These tools aim to offer residents up-to-date rainfall forecasts and flood alerts, enabling them to plan their daily activities accordingly.

This project is supported by the HDFC-ERGO IIT Bombay (HE-IITB) Innovation Lab, funded by HDFC ERGO, in partnership with the MCGM Centre for Municipal Capacity Building and Research (MCMCR).

The forecasting system gathers weather data from the Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) observatories in Colaba, Santacruz, and Marine Lines. Additionally, it incorporates data from over 60 automatic weather and rainfall monitoring stations throughout Mumbai and its surrounding areas.

Using global forecasting systems (GFS) enhanced by AI and ML modeling, the hyperlocal rainfall forecasts are highly accurate. Users can receive hourly rainfall updates for the next 24 hours through both the web portal and the app.

The system also features nine water-level monitoring stations situated in various flood-prone locations across Mumbai, providing near real-time updates on waterlogging during the monsoon. Users can report flooding in their area by filling out a water level form on the portal or the app. Additionally, the system offers real-time flooding information for local railway stations in Mumbai.

Moreover, the platform integrates social media sentiment analysis, capturing posts from X (formerly Twitter) using hashtags like #MumbaiRains to reflect the public's mood regarding the monsoon.

Today, the Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Palghar, Satara, and Kolhapur. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also issued a high tide warning. According to reports, Mumbai has already surpassed the 1,000 mm rainfall mark this monsoon season.
