Tiruchirappalli: In a swift response to the recent Kallakurichi hooch tragedy in Tamil Nadu, where 50 people lost their lives, authorities seized and destroyed 250 liters of illicit liquor in Tiruchirappalli district.

Tiruchirappalli District Collector Pradeep Kumar and Superintendent of Police Varun Kumar led the operation on Friday night, acting on intelligence reports. Following the seizure, Collector Kumar addressed the local community, educating them on the dangers of consuming illicit liquor and encouraging them to pledge not to consume such substances.

The crackdown comes shortly after Tamil Nadu Health Minister and DMK leader Subramanian Ma confirmed the deaths in Kallakurichi district. According to the minister, 50 people died after consuming liquor mixed with methanol. "So far, 185 people have been hospitalized in four hospitals: Kallakurichi Hospital, JIPMER Hospital in Puducherry, Salem Government Hospital, and Viluppuram Government Hospital. Our senior officials have been monitoring the situation continuously," he stated.

In a session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that the state government would cover all educational and hostel expenses for children who lost one or both parents in the Kallakurichi tragedy. The assembly session saw a disruption as opposition AIADMK members demanded a detailed discussion on the hooch incident.
