Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'Orange' alert for Chennai, Tamil Nadu, with severe to very heavy rains expected. The weather warning is in effect until Saturday (November 27).
On Thursday, heavy rains lashed numerous regions of Tamil Nadu, including Thoothukodi and Ramanathapuram districts, inundating the Tiruchendur Subramanya Swamy shrine. A red signal means heavy to extremely heavy rainfall of more than 20 cm in 24 hours, while an orange alert means very heavy rains of 6 cm to 20 cm. A yellow notice means 6 to 11 cm of rain is expected.
The situation of low-lying parts of the district, particularly Paramakudi and R.S. Mangalam, is being regularly watched by Revenue and Disaster Management authorities, according to the Ramanathapuram District Collector.
The flow of pilgrims to the temple town of Rameswaram has taken a battering, according to tourism officials in the region, since the onset of the northeast monsoon and severe rains.
